A puck screen is one of the simplest, most immediate upgrades you can make to your espresso workflow — and the Pesado version is one of the most well-made available. Placed on top of your tamped coffee puck before locking the portafilter into the group head, the puck screen intercepts the pressurised burst of water from the group head and distributes it evenly across the entire puck surface before it makes contact with your grounds. The result is a more uniform, controlled infusion — less channelling, more consistent extraction, and a cleaner, more balanced shot every time.
Why Channelling Happens — and How This Stops It When pressurised water from the group head hits an unprotected puck, it naturally finds the path of least resistance — creating micro-channels through the grounds rather than flowing evenly through the entire bed. These channels cause some areas of the puck to over-extract while others remain under-extracted, producing a shot that tastes uneven and is difficult to dial in consistently. The Pesado puck screen's 100-micron stainless steel mesh acts as a diffuser, slowing and spreading the initial water flow so it saturates the full puck surface uniformly from the very first drop. It also protects the puck during pre-infusion, keeping the surface intact for a cleaner drawdown.
